The Bernese Mountain Dog, also known as the Berner Sennenhund, boasts a rich history rooted in Switzerland, particularly in the midland region near Bern. These dogs, bearing a striking resemblance to Mastiffs and large black-and-tan dogs with white markings, were the trusted companions of Roman soldiers crossing the Alps over two thousand years ago. Renowned for their strength and intelligence, these dogs were tasked with pulling carts laden with supplies, herding cattle, and serving as vigilant watchdogs. The Bernese Mountain Dog breed, as we know it today, is the result of crosses between the Mastiff type and the black-and-tan dogs.

The Berner, named after the region of Bern, is one of the four distinguished Sennenhund breeds. The term “Sennenhund” translates to “dairy farmer’s dog,” a term widely used across Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The Berner, along with its counterparts – the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, the Appenzeller Sennenhund, and Entlebucher, were employed to pull milk carts, transport wagons filled with textiles, and herd cattle. However, the advent of industrial farming led to a decline in the number of Bernese Mountain Dogs as canine labor was replaced.

The early 1900s marked the introduction of the Bernese Mountain Dog to the United States. Isaac Schliess, a Kansas farmer, is believed to have been the pioneer in importing Bernese Mountain Dogs to the United States in 1926. The breed’s successful introduction came in 1937, with the first two AKC-recognized Berners named Fridy and Quell. Since then, the breed has steadily gained popularity in the U.S., securing its place as one of the country’s most beloved dog breeds.
